Charles Edward Sayle (1864-1924) was born in Cambridge on 6 December 1864. He entered New College, Oxford, in 1883 (B.A., 1887; M.A., 1890), and St John's College, Cambridge, in 1890. He joined the staff of Cambridge University Library in 1893, and was assistant librarian, 1910-1924. He died on 4 July 1924.
